Home » Football NewsStangs NOT StungSeptember 8, 2008 By Ron Mau of Smoky Mountain High SchoolWhen the Hayesville Yellow Jackets took the field Friday night they ran through a sign that said "sting the stangs". Very little stinging occurred; the Mustangs repeatedly swatted the Yellow Jackets in a 38-10 victory. The Mustang defense turned in another solid performance holding the Jackets to 75 yards in the first three quarters while the Mustang offense generated 199 rushing yards, 133 passing yards and controlled the ball for nearly 29 minutes of game time. Hayesville received the opening kick-off and returned the ball to the Smoky Mountain 29 yard line. Three plays later Hayesville lined up to kick a field goal that ended with the Mustang's Logan Buchanan tackling the holder 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage. The Yellow Jackets started their second drive of the game only 40 yards from paydirt after the Mustangs failed to convert on a fourth and one at the 8:20 park in the first quarter. The Smoky Mountain defense allowed only 10 yards and a Hayesville 47 yard field goal attempt came up short. The third time was the charm for Hayesville as they struck first on a 32 yard field goal at the 3:12 mark in the first quarter. At that point the Mustang defense had given up 49 yards on 13 plays and the Mustang offense had generated only 14 yards on seven plays. Logan Buchanan returned the ensuing kick-off 46 yards to the Hayesville 46 yard line. Logan then caught a 36 yard pass from Colton Hunt to set the Mustangs up at the Hayesville 10 yard line. On the next play, Hunt covered the remaining 10 yards for the touchdown. Matt Dougherty's extra point was good and the Mustangs were in the lead for good, 7 to 3. The Mustangs scored the remaining points of the first half on their next drive which started at the 1:12 mark of the first quarter on their own 28 yard line. Thirteen plays and 5 minutes and 24 seconds later, Colton Hunt rushed for his second touchdown from 5 yards out. Matt Bryson carried the ball on 6 of the 13 plays for 24 of the drive's yards. Matt Dougherty converted the extra point to increase the Mustang lead to 14-3. The Mustangs generated over 110 yards of offense in the third quarter, took advantage of two Hayesville turnovers and scored 17 points while the defense held Hayesville to 23 yards in the quarter. Matt Dougherty's 19 yard field goal capped off a second half opening 11 play 43 yard drive that consumed 6 minutes, 23 seconds. The drive featured 5 carries and 24 yards from Matt Bryson and 5 carries for 17 yards by Lucas Brooks. The Mustangs turned a Hayesville fumble into a 3 play 20 yard touchdown drive with Michael Morgan rushing for the touchdown from 13 yards out with 4:30 left in the third quarter. Dougherty's kick increased the Mustang lead to 24 to 3. Hayesville fumbled on their following drive setting the Mustangs up at midfield. Seven plays later Smoky Mountain scored on a 2 yard touchdown run by Matt Bryson. Bryson had 5 carries for 21 yards on the drive. The longest play of the drive was a 19 yard pass from Logan Buchanan to Jesse Walker. Dougherty's kick increased the Mustang lead to 31 to 3. Colton Hunt concluded the scoring for Smoky Mountain when he intercepted a pass at the Mustang 45 yard line and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown with 3:04 left in the game. Hayesville was finally able to generate some offense on a meaningless 73 yard drive that concluded with a 33 yard touchdown pass with 1:25 left in the game. The extra point concluded the scoring for the night at 38 - 10. Defensively 10 out of Hayesville's 43 plays were for negative yards. (3 sacks and 7 tackles for a loss). Defensive leaders were Logan Buchanan with 10 total tackles and Chad Harper with 8 total tackles. Tackles for losses were credited to Buchanan (3), Harper (1), Travis Buchanan (1), Eric Barnes (1) and Carlin Shelton (1). Sacks were credited to Harper, Ronnie Mau and Drew Buchanan. Game Notes: Logan Buchanan had a well-rounded game line: 1 for 1 passing for 19 yards, 5 rushes for 27 yards, 1 reception for 36 yards, 1 kick-off return for 46 yards and 10 total tackles. Colton Hunt also had a busy night: 8 for 11 passing for 114 yards, 5 rushes 19 yards and 2 TDs (a 3rd TD was called back due to a penalty), 1 kick-off return for 45 yards, 2 tackles and 1 interception return of 55 yards for a td. Smoky Mountain completed 9 passes (Colton Hunt 8 for 11 and Logan Buchanan 1 for 1) to 6 different receivers. Hayesville was 1 for 10 on third down conversions. For box score click here.
